Nine News Australia: How to Watch Live, Catch Up and Contact

If you searched for “nine news”, you are probably after one of two things: what the channel actually is, or how to watch it. Here is the short version of both.
Quick Answer
Nine News (written as 9News) is the national news service of Australia’s Nine Network. Its main bulletin airs at 6pm every night. You can watch it free-to-air on Channel 9, stream it live online with 9Now, or catch up on the day’s stories on nine.com.au — the old 9news.com.au address now redirects there.
What Is Nine News?
Nine News is the television news service of the Nine Network, one of Australia’s three big commercial TV networks. It has been on air since 1956, making it one of the longest-running news services in the country.
For most of its life it was called National Nine News. The name changed to Nine News in 2008, and in January 2024 it was rebranded again as 9News. You will see both names used — they mean the same thing.
The newsroom is based at Nine’s headquarters at 1 Denison Street, North Sydney, with state newsrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Each state gets its own local edition of the 6pm bulletin, plus national bulletins through the day.
How to Watch Nine News Live
On TV
The simplest way is still free-to-air television. Nine News airs on Channel 9 — the main Nine channel. If you have a TV antenna and a digital TV or set-top box, you don’t need an account, an app or the internet.
Online with 9Now
To watch online, Nine’s free streaming service is 9Now. It carries Channel 9 live, along with 9Gem, 9Go!, 9Life and 9Rush, plus catch-up episodes of shows.
9Now is free, but you need a free Nine account to use it. Signing up takes a couple of minutes:
- Go to 9now.com.au or open the 9Now app.
- Choose Sign Up and enter your name, email, password, year of birth and postcode.
- Confirm your email if asked, then sign in.
- Open the Live TV section and pick Channel 9.
One thing to know: 9Now only works inside Australia. If you are overseas, the stream will be blocked because of broadcast rights.
How to Watch 9Now on Your Smart TV
The 9Now app is available on most smart TVs, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fetch TV and Telstra TV. To link it:
- Open the 9Now app on your phone and sign in.
- Open 9Now on your TV and choose a live channel.
- Your TV will show a six-digit code — type it into the app on your phone.
After that, the TV stays signed in and you can watch straight from the big screen.
Missed the News? How to Catch Up
If you missed the 6pm bulletin, you have a few options:
- 9Now catch-up: full bulletins are added to 9Now after they air, so you can watch when it suits you. Live bulletins can take a little while to appear.
- 9News on YouTube: the official 9News Australia channel posts clips and full bulletins from each city.
- nine.com.au: Nine’s website carries the day’s biggest 9News stories in text and video form (the old 9news.com.au address now redirects to nine.com.au).
Nine News Bulletin Times
Here is when the main Nine News bulletins air (times are local):
- Today Early News — 5:00am, weekdays
- 9News Morning — 11:30am, weekdays
- 9News Afternoon — 4:00pm, weekdays
- 9News (flagship 6pm bulletin) — 6:00pm, every night, one hour

The Gold Coast also gets its own half-hour bulletin on weeknights, just before the 6pm news.
The 9News App Is Now the nine.com.au App
There is no longer a standalone 9News app. When Nine relaunched nine.com.au, the 9News app was folded into the nine.com.au app — if you had it installed, it updated automatically. The nine.com.au app (free, iOS and Android) brings 9News together with sport, entertainment and lifestyle in one place.
How to Contact Nine News
Got a story, photo or video for the newsroom? 9News asks viewers to send pictures, videos and stories to contact@9news.com.au. Include what happened, where and when it happened, and your contact details so a journalist can follow up.
Who Owns Nine News?
Nine News is owned by Nine Entertainment, one of Australia’s largest media companies. Nine also owns the Nine Network itself, the Stan streaming service, newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, and digital sites like nine.com.au.
